Web Design in Johannesburg

Websites for
Johannesburg business.

Built by an agency in Pietermaritzburg. We will explain in the first paragraph why we are telling you that, instead of hiding it.

We are not a Johannesburg agency. Several that say they are, are not either.

DEZIGN-IT has been in Pietermaritzburg since 2013. We work with businesses across Gauteng, and we do it from KwaZulu-Natal. You are going to find that out eventually, so you may as well find out on the page rather than three weeks into a project.

It is worth knowing that a fair number of agencies ranking for this search are doing exactly the same thing. A Johannesburg address on a contact page is often a virtual office, a registered address, or a founder's home in a different province. The question is not really whether your web designer sits in Sandton. It is whether the arrangement is disclosed, and whether the work is good.

So here is the disclosure, and below it, the case.

Disqualify us first

When you should hire someone in Johannesburg instead of us.

There are real cases where local wins, and we would rather say so here than waste a call finding out together.

Hire locally if you need regular on-site presence. Ongoing product photography, in-person team workshops, event coverage, or a business where someone genuinely needs to walk your floor every month. Distance is a real cost there and we will not pretend otherwise.

Hire locally if your buying process demands it. Some organisations, particularly in corporate procurement, simply require a supplier who can appear in a boardroom on short notice. That is a legitimate requirement and not one we can meet from Pietermaritzburg.

Everything else is a website. Design, build, content, testing, hosting, search. None of it improves by being done 500 kilometres further north.

The actual argument

What working with a KZN agency actually changes.

You deal with the person doing the work. This is the difference that matters most and it has nothing to do with geography. Larger agencies sell you a senior and staff you a junior. We are small enough that the person who scoped your project is the person building it.

Our overheads are not in your quote. An agency carrying a Johannesburg office, parking and account management team has to recover that somewhere, and it is recovered in the price of your website. We do not carry it, so you do not pay for it.

You get written decisions instead of remembered ones. Remote work forces a discipline that in-person work often skips. Scope, changes and decisions are documented because they have to be. Six months later, when someone asks why a page was built a certain way, there is an answer.

Built for here

A website that works in South African conditions.

A lot of web design advice is written for markets where electricity is constant, data is cheap and everyone is on fibre. Yours is not that market.

Load shedding. Your site is hosted away from your premises with regional redundancy, so it stays up when you are dark. More importantly, enquiries route to mobile rather than a desk phone nobody is sitting at.

Mobile data costs real money here. Heavy pages are not just slow, they are expensive for the person browsing. We build light. That is also, not coincidentally, what Google rewards.

Local payment rails. PayFast, Yoco and Ozow, because that is what South African customers will actually complete a purchase with. International gateways where you genuinely sell abroad, not by default.

POPIA. Consent capture, honest cookie handling and secure data practice built in, plus a plain explanation of where your obligations run past the website itself.

What it costs

From R5,000. Quoted, not packaged.

Our range runs from R5,000 to R30,000 and up. A single landing page sits at the bottom. A multi-page business site with custom design and written content sits in the middle. Ecommerce and custom builds sit at the top.

We do not publish fixed packages, because every package price we have ever seen gets renegotiated the moment the agency sees the actual requirements. You get a quote for your project, with the scope written down, before anyone starts.

Questions

Johannesburg clients usually ask these.

Are you based in Johannesburg?

No. DEZIGN-IT is based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, and has been since 2013. We work with Johannesburg and wider Gauteng businesses remotely. We say this plainly because a number of agencies that appear to be local are running the same arrangement without mentioning it, and you deserve to know who you are actually hiring.

Does it matter that you are not in Johannesburg?

For building and running a website, rarely. The work is design, code, content and testing, none of which requires being in the same province. It matters if you need someone physically on site regularly, for example for ongoing product photography, in-person workshops, or event coverage. If that is your situation, hire locally. We will say so on the call rather than take the project.

What does a website cost?

Our range is R5,000 to R30,000 and up, depending on scope. A single landing page sits at the bottom of that. A multi-page business site with custom design and content sits in the middle. Ecommerce and custom builds sit at the top. We quote the actual project rather than publish a package price that changes the moment we see your requirements.

How do you handle load shedding?

Your website itself is unaffected, because we host on infrastructure outside your premises with redundancy across regions. What load shedding does affect is your customers' ability to browse and your team's ability to respond. We build for that: light pages that load on a weak mobile connection, forms that queue rather than fail, and contact routes that reach you on mobile rather than a desk phone.

Which payment gateways do you integrate?

PayFast, Yoco and Ozow are the ones most South African businesses actually use, and we integrate all three. We can work with Stripe or PayPal where you sell internationally, but for domestic sales the local gateways clear faster and cost less.

Is the site POPIA compliant?

We build the technical groundwork: consent capture on forms, a cookie notice that reflects what you actually run, secure data handling, and a privacy policy structure. Compliance is broader than a website and depends on how your business stores and uses data, so we cover the site and tell you plainly where your obligations extend past it.
